RoombaCat
A hungry cat. An innocent robot. The perfect crumb heist.
Lupin the cat is on a diet. Otto the robot vacuum just wants to clean. After breakfast, the family heads out and leaves crumbs all over the house, and Lupin turns Otto's cleaning routine into the heist of the century.
The fuller Otto's bag, the more it's worth... and the harder it is to steer. Only crumbs in the stash count, so when the family's car pulls in: one last pass, or back to the stash? Drift for a turbo, but don't throw Lupin overboard... especially when he's carrying the bacon!
Two-minute runs. Chase your best score.
Controls
- Keyboard: ↑ or W to drive · ↓ or S to brake and reverse · ← → or A D to turn
- Gamepad: left stick or D-pad
- Touch (phones and tablets, landscape): put your thumb down anywhere and drag. The whole screen is the stick.
Turn while accelerating hard to drift. Hold the drift to charge a turbo, then let go of the turn.
Menus, the countdown, pausing and the results screen all work the same way: just move.
How to play
- Sweep the crumbs. Otto's bag fills up. The fuller it is, the heavier he drives, but the more it's worth: X1, then X2, then X3.
- Stash it at the base. Emptying the bag in the hallway moves the crumbs to Lupin's secret stash and turns them into kcal.
- Don't get greedy. Crumbs still in the bag when time runs out are lost. Listen for the car in the driveway.
- Drift for speed, but watch Lupin's balance. Too much and he goes overboard.
- Keep an eye out for the bacon, the milk puddle, the freshly mopped floor and the cereal box that falls at 1:00.
Your run ends with a rank, from Still on a Diet to Gentleman Thief. Lupin judges it by the calories stolen. Otto judges it by how clean the floor is.
Cat and Robot, movement only
Theme: a cat who thinks he's in a heist movie, riding a robot who thinks it's just another day of cleaning. Every crumb makes both of them happy.
Restriction: the whole game, menus included, is played with the four directions and nothing else. No action buttons, no clicks, no on-screen buttons.
Made under Super Nintendo limits
Roomba Cat is built in Unity, but every system follows the rules of the Super Nintendo so it can be ported to the real console later: 256x224 at 60 Hz, a Mode 7 floor drawn line by line, 8x8 tiles (no more than 256 different ones), sprites up to 32x32 with 16-color palettes that never rotate or scale (Otto and Lupin are pre-drawn from 9 angles), and music written as a 6-channel tracker module that a real SNES sound chip can play.
How we used AI
AI use was planned from day one and logged task by task
Python, Node, ffmpeg and openmpt123: the AIs wrote scripts instead of drawing or recording by hand, so the sprites, the floor, the portraits and the audio can all be rebuilt from code.
